The Choteau City Parks and recreation fall under the responsibility of the Public Works Department.

The City of Choteau requires all dogs and cats living in the city limits be licensed within 15 days of the animal reaching the age of four months. Proof of rabies vaccination is required at the time of licensing. Licenses expire each year on December 31. Licenses are available for renewal in December and January. After February 1, license fees increase by $10 for each animal licensed.
Pets are required to be under control at all times. Barking dogs must be quieted and not be allowed to become a nuisance.
Pigs are not allowed to be kept within the City limits.
It is the duty of owners and/or tenants of any premises within the City of Choteau limits to keep sidewalks cleared of snow and ice. Business sidewalks must be cleared before 11 am and residential sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours of snowstorm.
Building & Zoning Permits
Permits are required for new home and business construction, additions, fences, roofs, siding, signed, etc. Approval must be received from the Choteau City Office before work can begin.
Home Based Businesses
A home occupation permit is required for any residence with a home-based business. The permit is available at the City Office from the Zoning Administrator.
Street Parking/Junk Vehicles
No vehicle may be parked continuously on a street in the business district for 10 days, or in a residential district for more 30 days. No more than one automotive vehicle of any kind or type without current license plates may be parked or stored on any residentially zoned property other than in completely enclosed buildings.
Weeds, grass, and other wild and uncared for vegetation growing to a height of eight inches or more must be cut down. If not, written notice of violation shall be served upon the wonder directing the nuisance weeds be cut within seven days of the mailing of the notice. If it is not taken care of in that time the City will mow the property and the property owner will be charged. These regulations include vacant lots. The City has a grass disposal site at the north end of the City Shop located at 22 2nd Street NE (behind the Big Sky Motel).
The CIty of Choteau provides each residences and business with garbage containers. Residential customers have a 95 gallon container. Household garbage must be placed in plastic bags and put into the container. Leaves, branches, and grass clippings are prohibited from being placed in the garbage containers. All garbage must be placed in the container and the lid must be able to be closed. Anything outside the container will not be picked up unless it is in a trash bag (no larger than 39 gallons) and carries a prepaid garbage sticker. Stickers are available at the City Office and Ace Hardware at a cost of $6.50 for 10 stickers. Large items must be taken to the Northern Montana Joint Refuse Disposal District (NMJRDD) roll-off site by the resident.
NMJRDD Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposal is handled by the NMJRDD. They roll-off site is located at northeast of Choteau and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 9am-5pm except holidays. Items taken directly to the roll-off site by cash or check. A list of charges is available by calling NMJRDD at 866-378-3095. Disposal of leaves, grass clippings, and small brush is free of cost at the roll-off site.
Water & Sewer Responsibilities
The property owner is responsible for maintaining the water and sewer service lines from the water mains to the house. Any leaks in the water sewer lines or blockages in the sewer service lines are the responsibility of the property owner.
Tree & Sidewalk Maintenance
The responsibility of tree and sidewalk maintenance is the responsibility of the owner of any premises in the city to provide routine maintenance of the sidewalks and trees in front of and adjoining their property, including but not limited to patching breaks in sidewalks, watering & trimming boulevard trees, etc. The City of Choteau has established a Tree & Sidewalk maintenance fund to address high hazard trees and sidewalks.
Leaf & Branch Pickup
The City Public Works Department will pick up tree branches from alleys two times per year, in the spring and the fall. Leaves need to be raked to the edge of the boulevard (do not bag) where they can be vacuumed up and hauled away. The City has leaf disposal at the north end of the City Shop located at 22 2nd St NE (behind the Big Sky Motal), but does not include sticks, branches, or evergreens.
City Council Meetings
The City council meets on the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month a t 5:30pm at City Hall. Agenda are posted at the Post Office, Courthouse, and City Hall the Friday before the meeting and are posted on our website.
