Choteau is named for French fur merchant, trader and explorer Pierre Chouteau, Jr., who is also the namesake of Chouteau County, Montana. Originally a trading post established by A.B. Hamilton in 1873, the town was platted in 1883 and incorporated in 1913.

Several mountains are nearby, including Mount Frazier, Old Baldy, and Ear Mountain. Teton Pass Ski Area is just 15 miles west, and to the south lies Freezout Lake, a birdwatcher’s paradise, where hundreds of thousands of birds gather at the lake during migration. 230 species of birds have been documented at the lake.

While there are many things to see and do in Choteau, the true treasure is the citizens of this small Montana town.

Choteau is a community proud of its heritage and embracing its future. Where neighbors helping neighbors is not a tagline, but a way of life.

There used to be a billboard right outside of town that said “If you’re lucky enough to live here, you’re lucky enough.” We couldn’t agree more.
